Water Treatment

Challenge

A Water Treatment Plant company in Makassar needed to improve its coagulation process to ensure consistent water quality, optimize chemical consumption, and enhance operator safety. The key challenge was to compare the technical and operational performance of 17% Liquid PAC against traditional PAC Powder under equivalent raw water turbidity conditions, while simultaneously maintaining cost efficiency and minimizing safety risks associated with handling and dissolving powder-based chemicals.

Results

The implementation of 17% Liquid PAC required a higher dosage—approximately 1.6 times more than PAC Powder—to achieve comparable turbidity reduction after sedimentation. Nevertheless, the transition resulted in a 7.05% improvement in monthly cost efficiency, eliminated the need for hazardous chemical dissolution processes, reduced operator exposure to irritants, and streamlined plant operations. This shift supports improved workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and reduced operational overhead.

Key Product

PAC 17%

“As an operator of a Water Treatment Plant in Makassar, we are always looking for ways to improve process efficiency while ensuring the safety of our operators. After switching from PAC powder to 17% liquid PAC, we experienced a very significant improvement. Although the required dosage is slightly higher, the water treatment results remain stable and consistently meet the established turbidity standards. Our monthly chemical costs have decreased. The elimination of manual dissolution processes has also reduced the risk of chemical exposure for our operators. The workflow has become much simpler, there is no longer a need for overtime, and overall operations run more smoothly. This solution has been extremely helpful for us. 17% liquid PAC not only improves the quality of water production, but also has a positive impact on workplace safety and operator comfort. We are very satisfied with the results and will continue using this product in our daily operations.”

About Customer Company

The company operates a Water Treatment Plant in Makassar, focusing on delivering high-quality treated water through efficient, safe, and sustainable chemical treatment technologies.

The Challenge

The company previously faced difficulties in maintaining strict turbidity standards while managing chemical costs and ensuring operator safety. Although PAC Powder was effective, it required a labor-intensive dissolution process, increased the risk of exposure to irritants, and added operational complexity. A more reliable, safer, and cost-efficient solution was required to enhance process stability and support continuous operations.

The Solution

After evaluating several coagulant options and considering the operational drawbacks of PAC Powder, the company conducted a detailed comparative study using 17% Liquid PAC. The selection was based on its ability to simplify dosing operations, eliminate the need for on-site dissolution, and reduce health risks for operators. The Liquid PAC was integrated into the existing dosing system with continuous process monitoring to ensure optimal performance and regulatory compliance.

The Results

Switching to 17% Liquid PAC enabled the plant to achieve target sedimentation turbidity (3.94 NTU using Liquid PAC versus 3.87 NTU using PAC Powder), despite the higher required dosage (10.4 mg/L compared to 6.33 mg/L). This optimization delivered a 7.05% monthly cost efficiency improvement based on total chemical consumption at a raw water flow rate of 5,760 m³/h. Operational benefits included the elimination of manual dissolution steps, reduced overtime, improved operator safety due to minimized exposure to irritants, and a more streamlined workflow. This improvement supports sustainable, reliable, and regulation-compliant water treatment operations.
