Industrial Water Treatment Chemical Storage and Transfer Guide

Safe storage and transfer of water-treatment chemicals begins with the SDS, chemical compatibility, secondary containment, and a clear unloading procedure. Do not select a tank, hose, or pump from the product name alone: concentration, temperature, wetted materials, maximum volume, and the spill route must be verified before the chemical is received on site.

Decisions Before Chemical Receipt

Good receiving practice prevents many chemical-room failures. Procurement, operations, and EHS should align on product identity, the current SDS, delivery volume, storage location, and the person authorised to receive and approve transfer.

Decision questionEvidence to checkOperating decision
Does the delivered product and concentration match the order?Label, batch number, SDS, and delivery documentsReject or quarantine a mismatch; never fill a tank labelled for a different product
Are the tank, seals, pipework, and hose compatible?SDS, supplier guidance, wetted-material list, and condition inspectionUse approved materials only; replace cracked, embrittled, or unidentified components
Is there enough volume and ready containment?Tank level, bund capacity, drainage path, and expansion spaceSet a fill limit; do not treat containment as operating storage volume
Can chemicals be stored beside each other?Hazard class and SDS incompatibilitiesSegregate materials that can react; label the area, transfer route, and isolation points
How will a spill or transfer residue be handled?Spill kit, procedure, trained people, and waste routeStop transfer, isolate the source, and manage residues under the site procedure and chemical properties

Storage Layout and Secondary Containment

Secondary containment protects against leaks from packaging, joints, and filling mistakes; it is not permission to combine incompatible products. Review the floor, bund, sump, and drainage so a release cannot reach stormwater or an uncontrolled process area. Keep SDS information accessible to operators and ensure tank labels can be read from the filling position.

For hazardous-chemical control at Indonesian workplaces, a core reference is KEP.187/MEN/1999. Specific duties can depend on chemical type, location, and facility permits, so they should always be checked with the site’s EHS and environmental responsible person.

An Auditable Unloading and Transfer Sequence

A safe transfer can be stopped and traced. The operator should be able to see the destination level, liquid route, isolation valves, and connections before a pump starts or a valve opens. Do not use drum colour, operator memory, or similar-looking connectors as the chemical identifier.

  1. Confirm the product, destination, volume, SDS, PPE, and weather conditions for outdoor unloading.
  2. Inspect hose, gasket, coupling, valve, vent, bund, and level gauge; ensure drains are shut or directed to the correct containment.
  3. Make connections, use a two-person check for critical products, then open valves gradually while watching for leaks and level rise.
  4. Record start time, volume, batch, operator, and anomalies. Stop immediately for a label mismatch, abnormal pressure, unusual odour/gas, or seepage.
  5. After transfer, depressurise under the procedure, disconnect safely, close the transfer point, clean the area, and update inventory.

Handoff to Dosing and Wastewater Treatment

Storage is inseparable from use. For measured chemical feed, select a Beta dosing pump for flow, backpressure, construction material, and calibration requirement—not nameplate capacity alone. A process programme can combine water and wastewater chemicals with separation equipment such as DAF if transfer, cleaning, or a spill creates oily rinse water or solids.

Do not send wash water, bund liquid, or residual product to a wastewater plant without knowing its composition and process load. Keep acid, alkaline, oxidising, reducing, and oily streams separated until their treatment route is defined. Indonesian technical standards for wastewater compliance include Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 5 of 2021; the facility permit and applicable sector limits remain the final reference.

Weekly Chemical-Area Inspection Checklist

  • Labels, SDS information, and flow-direction marking remain legible and match actual contents.
  • Tank level, alarm, vent, valve, hose, and pump show no sign of leakage or damage.
  • The bund is clean, dry, free of unidentified product, and has controlled drainage.
  • Products are within the SDS storage conditions and are not expired.
  • Spill kit, PPE, eyewash/shower where required by the site procedure, and escalation contacts are available.
  • Receiving, transfer, pump-calibration, and minor-incident logs are current and reviewed by the responsible person.

PT Beta Pramesti Asia can review chemical-feed and water-treatment application requirements against the chemical data, consumption rate, process, and operating constraints. Prepare the SDS, wetted-material list, flow diagram, and process target before consultation so the design is not built on assumptions.
